Are you misreading your intuition?

How can you tell?

In the movie, ‘Night at the Museum’ — Ben Stiller’s character comes up with an idea of a ‘Snapper’. That device allows you to turn ON/OFF a light by snapping your fingers. The roadblock he finds is that there is another product called the ‘Clapper’ which steals his product’s thunder. He failed to identify in his research that it was easier for people to clap as opposed to snap their fingers. Though it is a humorous scene, it underlines a strong product development principle. How can we tell if our ideas and intuition amount to anything?

It comes from two things — experience and recognition. To understand anything, we have to somehow measure it. How do you measure intuition? We have to get it out of the box of it being just a vague entity. Sharpen our awareness of when we are using intuition to judge something and then measure how often (& under what conditions) our intuition was right. Gaining experience is invaluable in honing our intuition. Our intuition might be more accurate in some areas but maybe we misread it completely in other areas. You have to ask yourself that question — did you have enough experience and experiments in the area that you applied your intuition to?
